Fantastic films at Open Book 2014

Open Book, Cape Town’s favourite literary festival includes an exciting film programme this year.

Hosted at the Labia Theatre on Orange Street from Thursday the 18th to Sunday the 21st September, the line-up includes fascinating feature-length documentaries that will resonate with anyone with literary inclinations.

Narrated by Meryl Streep, Out of Print asks tough questions about the future of the printed book in an increasingly digital world. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion with well-known local technopreneur Arthur Attwell.

Diaries of a Dissident Poet, a new film by Cape Town director Shelley Barry, provides an intimate look at the life and times of legendary South African struggle poet James Matthews. The irrepressible Mr. Matthews will participate in a Q&A session following the film.

Australian author, journalist and Open Book guest Antony Loewenstein will present a sneak preview of his forthcoming documentary Disaster Capitalism before a special screening of Four Horsemen, a no-holds-barred exposé of 21st century politics and economics.

For decades, celebrated American author Gore Vidal was one of the world’s most outspoken political and cultural critics, not least when it came to questions about the country of his birth. Gore Vidal – The United States of Amnesia is a beautifully crafted biopic that pays tribute to this most public of intellectuals and his extraordinary life.
